Friends of FIDA
The Friends of FIDA (FOF) is an initiative that was established in 2003 by FIDA Kenya council members under the stewardship of Jean Kamau; and, a few friends. The initiative arose out of a series of (five) successful Annual Legal Services Golf Day events which were held between 1998 and 2002. The Golf sport Day events were organized in order to facilitate interaction between FIDA Kenya, the golfing fraternity, individuals and the corporate community, and to raise funds to support provision of legal aid to needy women and children and also encourage women to play golf! The purpose of FOF initiative is three fold:- To facilitate interaction among the corporate community, media and individual philanthropists who believe in social justice;
- To raise funds from friends and events to support the mission and vision of FIDA Kenya;
- To raise public profile and awareness about FIDA Kenya.
The FOF Initiative, which began with a small group of philanthropists, has over the years grown in numbers and resources. The numbers of friends currently stand at one hundred and fifty (150). The existing friends are drawn from local corporations, businesses and law firms, independent foundations, NGOs and individual well wishers.
Notably, The Corporate Friends of FIDA include; Yara East Africa Limited, African Attire Ltd, Synergestics Services, Flex fitness Center, Westbuild Contractors, Glaxo SmithKline Ltd and NIC Bank. Law firm & Business friends include; Kiage & Co., Kinyori & Associates and Kipkenda Lilian & Co. NGO friends include; the Kenya Human Rights Commission, Urgent Action Fund-Africa, Abantu for Development,and Action Aid Kenya.
Independent Foundations include; The Chandaria Foundation.
Individual philanthropists include: Prof. Athena Mutua and Prof. Makau Mutua, Pheroze Nowrojee, Hon. Millie Odhiambo-Mabona, Kaari Murungi, Hon. James Orengo, Hon. Moody Awori, Hon. Charity Ngilu, Hon. Prof. Nyang Nyong'o, Hon. David Mwiraria, Hon. Raphael Tuju, Hon. Justice Oluoch, Hon. Justice Martha Koome; Hon Kalonzo Musyoka and Dorcas Kitaa. Since 2003, Friends of FIDA has engaged in various activities in the country e.g. has recruited friends, held family fun days, and hosted black- tie dinner & dance events for individual friends, local companies, businesses and donor agencies. These activities have in the last three years, not only been able to realize a modest sum of Kshs 1, 246, 260.00 but proved to be an excellent opportunity to interact with individual philanthropists and the corporate community, a potential source for long-term support for the cause of FIDA Kenya. The funds raised have been channeled to FIDA Kenya's Litigation Fund which supports legal aid and awareness raising on legal rights for the majority needy women and children. We have four categories of Friends of FIDA.
